Piva, the first regional nature park in Montenegro was declared on the 22nd of April 2015, on Earth Day. The Piva Nature Park is located in the far northwest of Montenegro between the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina and the boundaries of the Durmitor National Park, occupying a significant part of the Plužine municipality.
The Piva Regional park of nature is a natural link between the Durmitor and Sutjeska National parks and has been recognized by a set of national and international documents and initiatives. Regional Park has exceptional natural features. Very varied relief whose most important characteristics are mountain surfaces with rich pastures and forests, deep canyons cut into the Tara, Piva, and Sušica, and mountain lakes (Stabanjska and Trnovačko) attracts many nature lovers and adventurers from the region and beyond. The rivers in the regional park, especially Tara and Piva, are rich in trout, grayling, and sprout. We can find rare species from the Montenegrin high mountain lakes – tritone or newt in the lakes.
The whole picture is rounded by approximately 20 smaller villages, harmonically embedded into the landscape with characteristic original architecture and numerous traditional shepherd log cabins, as well as elements of cultural landscapes that testify to the history, culture, and heritage of Piva. Special living conditions are created here to preserve some of the last representatives of rare and protected species.
Mountainous Group: Maglić, Bioč, Volujak and Vlasulja
In the northwestern part of Montenegro, there are four mountains that do not have a common name, although they make a unique geomorphologic and geological unit, with the center of the group in the area of Trnovačko Lake. These are Maglić, Bioč, Volujak, and Vlasulja. The highest peaks of the group are Veliki Vitao (2,396m) on Bioče, Veliki Maglić (2,386m), Velika Vlasulja (2,336m), and Studenac on the mountain Volujak (2,296m). The whole area of these mountains is outlined by the Piva canyon valley in the east, the Sutjeska valley on the northwest, and the Vrbnica valley to the south. These valleys are a real treasure for visitors due to the attractiveness of different landscapes: from the glittering shoals cascading over green valley sides, tight cliffs and rocky perimeter of the high plateau, to the highest peaks carved by glacial erosion.
VOLUJAK (1.997m)
Volujak is a mountain located in the southeast of Plužine. Its highest peak is at 1,997m. The view from the top of Volujak reveals the little-known geography of this mid-height mountain. On the north side, behind the deep valley of limestone, emerges a juniper covered 1,940m high summit. The arc to the east, over the Montenegrin Vale, is dotted with rocky and grass bosquets of Gradsko Brdo (1,963m) and Mramorje (1,920m), and behind these, on the north side, are the scary hail valleys, a virtually unexplored part of the mountain.
Piva Lake
The Piva Lake was formed by the construction of the Piva hydro-electric plant which is 240 meters high. Piva Lake is 45 kilometers long and up to 200 meters deep. There is a story that Piva canyon was even more beautiful, more attractive, and more mysterious than the Tara canyon. Cruising on the emerald green water will fill you with the tranquility, and the sight of the stone cliffs, where one can find golden eagles’ nests and chamois, will fill you with the veneration of this wild beauty.
Nature was incredibly generous to the area of Piva and gave it picturesque villages and ideal conditions for fishing, hunting, cycling, cruising, mountaineering, and walking. This area is famous for its medicinal herbs, teas, and homemade products of the best quality and with high ecological standards.
The famous cultural-historical monument from this area is Monastery of Piva. It has been constructed in the spring of the Piva River in the 16th century. In the past centuries it represented the most important spiritual and cultural center of this area; and even today it has a very rich treasury.
